The Story

Before the nations knew the name.

Before the stages, the records and the nations, there was a boy from Jamaica learning to trust God through circumstances he did not choose.

Kevin Dwayne Downswell

I

The hidden years

Kevin Downswell was born in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, Jamaica, to a mother who was only 15 years old.

She was a child raising a child.

Life was difficult, but his mother sacrificed everything she could to make sure her son was cared for. A few years later they moved from Westmoreland to St. Catherine, and the struggle followed them.

But so did her song.

Through difficult seasons, Kevin remembers his mother singing. And somewhere in those years, something was being planted in him.

He grew up in communities including Maxfield Avenue and Central Village, places where some dreams could feel too big for the circumstances around you.

But Kevin dreamed anyway.

“I was dreaming about things when I didn’t have a right to dream.”

School became one of his great focuses. Whatever was happening at home, he believed education could open another door. He studied. He pushed himself. He excelled.

Long before he knew where his life was going, he had already decided that where he started would not determine where he ended.

II

The encounter

At 13, Kevin met Christ.

Everything did not change overnight. There were mistakes. There was growing to do. There were questions to work through.

But something had begun.

He found himself falling more deeply in love with Jesus, and at Equator Faith Mission Assembly on Maxfield Avenue, that love began taking shape as ministry.

It was a small church filled with ordinary people carrying real burdens.

That church became one of Kevin’s greatest training grounds.

He learned to worship there. He learned to exhort and preach there. He learned to study the Word there. He learned to stand behind a microphone and minister whether the sound system worked properly or not.

Most importantly, he learned to love people.

“People came carrying real burdens. You had to know how to lead them into the presence of God.”

Long before ministry became international, God was teaching Kevin what ministry actually meant.

III

The road that changed

Education remained part of the dream.

Even after stumbling academically during his A-level years, Kevin refused to stop. Community college became the bridge, and two years later he entered the University of the West Indies.

There, another part of him began to emerge.

He became president of the Christian Fellowship and learned that leadership was bigger than having the loudest voice in the room. He learned to listen. To trust people. To build with a team. To allow other people’s wisdom into the decisions he made.

Academically, he completed four years of Biochemistry, graduating with honors.

Medicine was next.

At least, that was Kevin’s plan.

Then came the instruction he did not want.

Full-time ministry.

Kevin wrestled with it. He cried for weeks. He had worked toward another future and was standing close enough to touch it.

But eventually, he surrendered.

“The Lord said, ‘Trust Me.’ And I did.”

The road Kevin had planned ended there.

Another one opened.

“The Lord said, ‘Trust Me.’ And I did.”
IV

The song and the word

In 2008, Kevin released his first album, Close to You.

He had no idea where it would lead.

There was no master plan for international ministry. No certainty that the songs would travel beyond Jamaica. There was a young man learning who he was, learning to love God, and trying to be faithful with what had been placed inside him.

One album became another.

The rooms changed. The audiences grew. The songs travelled.

But music and ministry were never separate assignments.

The song carried the message.

“My heart was always after God.”

From the beginning, the microphone was never the destination.

People were.

V

To the nations

What began in Jamaica began travelling far beyond it.

Songs crossed borders. Invitations came. Rooms became larger. Kevin found himself ministering in places he once could not have imagined reaching.

From Jamaica to the Caribbean, North America, Europe, Africa and beyond, the same message continued to travel.

Albums followed albums. Songs became part of people’s lives. Doors opened that Kevin could never have opened for himself.

Recognition came too.

But when Kevin looks back, the accomplishment is not the part that overwhelms him.

The distance is.

The distance between where he began and where God has allowed him to stand.

“I can never be prideful because I remember where I’m coming from.”

The boy who dreamed when his circumstances told him not to was now watching God carry those dreams farther than he could have planned.

VI

The work off the stage

The stage has never been enough.

Kevin has always carried a natural love for people and a desire to see them win, overcome and become who God created them to be.

That conviction eventually found expression beyond music.

Through the Realignment Initiative, Kevin and his wife Marsha have poured into vulnerable children, giving attention, mentorship, love and support to lives that could easily have been overlooked.

He has also invested in emerging voices and the next generation.

Because ministry, to Kevin, cannot end when the microphone is turned off.

“Anointing without compassion is incomplete.”

The music matters.

The preaching matters.

And so does the person standing in front of you who needs somebody to care.

VII

Still going

Kevin’s story is still being written.

There are more songs to sing. More people to reach. More places to go. More lives to pour into.

But the foundation has not changed.

A mother’s sacrifice.

A boy who kept dreaming.

A 13-year-old discovering Jesus.

A small church on Maxfield Avenue.

A student who stumbled and kept going.

A future doctor who surrendered his plans when God called.

A first album in 2008.

And grace through all of it.

“His goodness is the backbone of my life. If He wasn’t there, I would never have made it from where I came from.”

That is the story Kevin carries into every room.

And wherever the story goes next, the reason remains the same.

“He must increase, but I must decrease.”John 3:30
